Healthy Rug Tips

Rugs never fail to improve a home. However, rugs can also become a hazard to one's health. This is because they can eventually become havens for dust mites, allergens, and other bacteria. Additionally, synthetic rugs contain harmful chemicals that can affect a person's respiratory system, eyes, skin, and other parts of the body. Still, there is no reason to panic though because there are many healthy tips you can employ when it comes to rugs.

To begin, it is best that you keep your rugs clean all the time. It is advisable to vacuum it regularly with the use of equipment that has High Efficiency Particulate Air filter. This will increase your chances of really getting those small particles of dirt away from the rug. You should also consider having you rugs undergo professional cleaning.

If you have synthetic rugs, then do not expose them to direct or high sunlight temperatures as this will make them emit more harmful fumes that are called VOCs or volatile organic compounds. In fact, it would be best to replace these synthetics with organic rugs because they do not contain VOCs. Examples of organic rugs include those made of wool, cotton, coir, sisal, etc.

Another healthy rug tip would be to tack the rugs down instead of gluing them to the floor as this will reduce VOC emissions. Additionally, if you are buying a new rug, ask the manufacturer to air it out first before giving it to you. If you have just installed a rug at home, reduce VOCs in the house through increasing air circulation by opening your doors and windows. Finally, know as well that area rugs are better than wall to wall carpeting for health reasons.
